Building the walls and installing padstones


The outside wall is going up with brick corners to add character. Padstone cast in situ ready for new steel support beams.



Cavity wall with bricks on the outside due to no access for rendering. Window opening set back to add character, supported on double RSJ.


Installing the RSJs

Double RSJ rests on pre-cast padstone to transfer load and support upper floor joists.

Old lintel removed and padstones set. Ends of floor joists supported on RSJ.

Joists supported on jiffy hangers bolted into RSJ web. Diagram below shows arrangement:

Fitting a new roof structure

Walls topped with cut blocks for correct height. Flitch beam enters wall to the right of worker.

Wall plate fitted and L brackets fixed to blockwork beneath.
Building the roof structure

Roof built with hand-cut timber. Accurate carpentry ensured approval by building control.



Hip roof completed. Breathable felt and battens will hold tiles in place. Extension now 95% watertight.
Tiling the roof

Roof tiles fitted with 64 ridge tiles. Valley made using code 5 lead. Hip irons secured to beams. Tiles match Redland 49 / Forticrete.

Removing the chimney

Chimney removed to below roof line. Hole repaired on both roofs.
