Resin Pointing | Repointing a Sandstone Patio

Resin Pointing

Resin pointing has become increasingly popular due to its durability and attractive finish. It is more expensive than traditional sand and cement pointing but offers unique benefits, including a small degree of flexibility that helps prevent cracking.

Traditional cement pointing can fail due to movement from temperature changes and moisture. Resin pointing addresses this problem, offering enhanced long-term performance.

The resin used was from Sika, supplied in 15kg tubs from Toolstation. Unlike cement, the resin must be kept wet during application to avoid staining the paving.

Old pointing must be removed to a depth of around 20mm before applying resin.

Patio Preparation

Here is the patio before cleaning and preparation:

Some slabs were lifted by roots and needed to be re-bedded in sand & cement after removing the sub-base.

Removing Old Pointing and Applying Resin

After cleaning the slabs by jet-washing and bleaching, the old pointing was removed. This was a laborious task, requiring a vacuum to clear debris from the joints.

Wet patio during pointing

The wet patio during pointing must be thoroughly rinsed to prevent faint staining. Residue can wear away over time, but cleaning carefully ensures the best finish.
